Cafeteria food very often attracts large amounts of criticism–and more often than not, this criticism is well deserved; in fact, one of the staples of the college experience is encounters with the fabled mystery meat: a gray, tasteless matter that is neither fish nor fowl (pun very much intended).
Any self-respecting college cafeteria, however, provides several alternatives for the ravenous student to explore – perhaps a salad bar, a vegetarian dish, or unsettling parodies of the familiar pizza and hamburger. In extreme cases, the student leaves the serving area defeated, his head bowed low, and makes his shameful journey to the cereal dispenser, neatly tucked away in a distant corner. From these moments of despair, There’s Always Cereal is born.
These are the experiences I wish to explore, from the delectable to the downright disgusting. Armed with what my mother claims is an incredibly difficult palate to please (and with a phobia of anything that springs from the earth), I will embark on a journey of culinary mediocrities. Bon appétit!
